Peptides in Canada: BPC-157, TB-500 & Ipamorelin Explained

## What Are Peptides — and Why Is Everyone in Canada Talking About Them?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — typically fewer than 50 — that act as signalling molecules in the body. Insulin is a peptide. So is human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which many men already encounter in [testosterone therapy](/blog/testosterone-therapy-injectable-topical-hcg-clomid-guide). Because peptides speak the body's own biochemical language, they have become one of the most searched topics in men's health, recovery and longevity medicine across Canada.

Three names dominate that conversation: **BPC-157**, **TB-500 (thymosin beta-4 fragment)** and **ipamorelin**. Online they are marketed for tendon healing, gut repair, injury recovery, sleep quality, body composition and "anti-aging." Offline, the regulatory and evidence picture is far more complicated — and Canadian men deserve a straight answer before they spend money on an unapproved vial.

This guide covers what each peptide is, what the research actually demonstrates, where Health Canada stands, which conditions are under formal investigation, and whether the oral peptide capsules flooding social media are worth anything at all.

## BPC-157: The "Body Protection Compound"

BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid sequence derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. In animal research it has produced genuinely striking results.

**What the research shows**

- Rodent studies published in _Journal of Physiology-Paris_, _Current Pharmaceutical Design_ and related journals report accelerated healing of transected Achilles tendon, muscle crush injury, ligament damage and bone defects.
- Animal models show protection of the gastrointestinal lining against NSAID damage, alcohol injury and inflammatory bowel lesions.
- Proposed mechanisms include upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor 2 signalling, promotion of angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), and modulation of nitric oxide pathways — the same pathway family involved in [erectile function](/blog/understanding-erectile-dysfunction-causes-symptoms-treatments).

**What the research does not show**

There are essentially **no published, adequately powered, randomized, placebo-controlled human trials** of BPC-157. Every widely cited benefit comes from animal models or uncontrolled anecdote. Animal tendon healing does not reliably translate to human tendon healing — a lesson learned repeatedly in sports medicine. Long-term human safety, correct dosing, and any interaction with cancer risk (a fair question for any pro-angiogenic compound) remain unstudied.

## TB-500 / Thymosin Beta-4: Repair Signalling

TB-500 is a synthetic fragment of **thymosin beta-4**, a naturally occurring protein that regulates actin — the cytoskeletal protein central to cell migration and wound repair.

Thymosin beta-4 itself has reached human clinical trials, primarily in **ophthalmology and dermatology**: registered studies have evaluated topical formulations for dry eye disease, neurotrophic keratopathy, epidermolysis bullosa and venous stasis ulcers, with some positive signals for corneal and skin wound healing. Preclinical work in cardiac repair after myocardial infarction and in neurological recovery after stroke has been promising in animals.

The critical distinction: **the fragment sold online as "TB-500" is not the same product as the pharmaceutical-grade thymosin beta-4 used in those trials**, and the injectable systemic use promoted for athletic recovery has not been validated in controlled human studies. TB-500 is also explicitly prohibited by the **World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)** at all times, alongside BPC-157 — a material issue for any competitive athlete in Canada.

## Ipamorelin: A Selective Growth Hormone Secretagogue

Ipamorelin is a pentapeptide **growth hormone secretagogue** — it binds the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) in the pituitary and stimulates a pulse of the body's own growth hormone. Its selling point versus older secretagogues is selectivity: in published pharmacology work it raised growth hormone with minimal effect on cortisol, prolactin or appetite.

**Evidence status:** ipamorelin was developed by Novo Nordisk and studied in early human trials, including for post-operative ileus, where it did not meet endpoints strong enough to carry it to approval. Development was discontinued. Related, better-studied secretagogues — such as **tesamorelin**, which _is_ approved in Canada for HIV-associated lipodystrophy, and **macimorelin**, approved as a diagnostic agent — show that this drug class can pass regulatory review when the data supports it. Ipamorelin has not.

Realistic expectations matter here. Raising growth hormone pulses is not the same as reversing aging. Documented effects of GH-axis stimulation include modest changes in body composition and sleep architecture; claims about dramatic fat loss, joint regeneration or longevity extension outrun the evidence.

## Health Canada Guidelines: The Part Most Websites Skip

This is where Canadian men most often get misled. Under the _Food and Drugs Act_:

- **BPC-157, TB-500 and ipamorelin are not authorized for sale as drugs or natural health products in Canada.** None holds a Drug Identification Number (DIN), Notice of Compliance, or NPN.
- Selling or advertising them for human therapeutic use in Canada is **not permitted**. Vendors sidestep this with "research chemical — not for human consumption" labelling, which is a legal shield, not a quality guarantee.
- **Importing** unauthorized drugs can result in seizure by the Canada Border Services Agency. Health Canada has issued repeated public advisories about unauthorized peptide and "research chemical" products sold online, citing risks of contamination, incorrect concentration and undeclared ingredients.
- Independent analyses of grey-market peptide vials have repeatedly found purity and dose mismatches, bacterial contamination and, in some cases, the wrong compound entirely. There is no sterility guarantee, no batch testing requirement, and no adverse-event reporting.
- A licensed prescriber may, in narrow circumstances, access unapproved products through the **Special Access Programme** — but that pathway requires a serious condition, exhausted conventional options and Health Canada authorization. It is not a route for recovery or aesthetic goals.

**Approved peptide therapeutics do exist in Canada** — insulin, GLP-1 agonists such as semaglutide and liraglutide, HCG, tesamorelin, desmopressin, teriparatide and others. The lesson is not "peptides don't work." It is that authorized peptides earned approval through human trials, and BPC-157, TB-500 and ipamorelin have not.

## Where Peptides Are Genuinely Under Investigation

Legitimate research is ongoing, and it is worth knowing where the serious work is happening:

- **Tissue and wound repair** — thymosin beta-4 in corneal, dermal and cardiac injury; academic centres in the US, Europe and Australia.
- **Gastrointestinal protection** — BPC-157 in inflammatory bowel and NSAID-induced injury models, largely through University of Zagreb research groups.
- **Metabolic and endocrine medicine** — the GLP-1 and dual-agonist class, now the most commercially successful peptide category in history, with active Canadian trial sites.
- **Musculoskeletal and sports medicine** — growth hormone secretagogues and repair peptides in tendinopathy and sarcopenia, mostly early phase.
- **Neurology and cardiology** — thymosin beta-4 and related peptides after stroke and myocardial infarction, still preclinical to early clinical.

Canadian clinical trials can be verified through Health Canada's Clinical Trials Database and ClinicalTrials.gov. If a clinic claims a peptide is "clinically proven," ask for the trial registration number.

## Do Oral Peptides Work? What the Research Says

Oral BPC-157 capsules, sublingual ipamorelin sprays and "peptide blends" in pill form are heavily marketed. The pharmacology is unforgiving.

Peptides are, biochemically, small proteins. Swallowed, they face gastric acid, pepsin, pancreatic proteases and intestinal brush-border enzymes, followed by first-pass hepatic metabolism. **Oral bioavailability for most unmodified peptides is well under 1–2%.** That is precisely why insulin was injected for a century.

The exceptions prove the rule. Oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) is only viable because it is co-formulated with the absorption enhancer SNAC and delivered at roughly a hundredfold higher dose than the injectable to achieve comparable exposure — an achievement requiring years of formulation science and large clinical programs. Cyclosporine and a handful of cyclic or highly modified peptides survive the gut for structural reasons most linear peptides do not share.

BPC-157 is sometimes argued to be gastric-acid stable, and its original characterization in gastric juice makes local gut activity plausible. But **stability is not absorption**, and there is no human pharmacokinetic data demonstrating meaningful systemic levels after oral dosing. For TB-500 and ipamorelin, oral and sublingual delivery has no credible human bioavailability evidence at all.

The practical conclusion: most oral peptide products sold to Canadians are unlikely to deliver a systemically active dose, regardless of what the label promises.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Peptides in Canada

### Are peptides legal in Canada?

Approved peptide drugs such as insulin, HCG, tesamorelin and GLP-1 agonists are legal with a prescription. BPC-157, TB-500 and ipamorelin are **not authorized for sale for human use** in Canada, and marketing them for therapeutic use is not permitted.

### Can you buy BPC-157 in Canada?

Not legally as a therapeutic product. Online vendors sell it labelled "for research use only," which places it outside any quality, sterility or potency oversight.

### Is BPC-157 approved by Health Canada?

No. BPC-157 has no DIN and no marketing authorization in Canada, and there are no completed large human trials supporting approval.

### Are peptides safe?

Approved, prescribed peptides have established safety profiles. Unregulated grey-market vials carry risks that come from the supply chain as much as the molecule: contamination, wrong dose, undeclared ingredients and non-sterile injection.

### Do peptides help with erectile dysfunction or testosterone?

There is no credible human evidence that BPC-157, TB-500 or ipamorelin treat ED or raise testosterone. Evidence-based options — PDE5 inhibitors, [injectable therapies such as Trimix](/blog/trimix-injections-guide-what-to-expect), [P-Shot](/blog/p-shot-prp-therapy-ed-edmonton-calgary), and properly monitored [testosterone therapy](/blog/testosterone-therapy-injectable-topical-hcg-clomid-guide) — have far stronger support.

### Will peptides show up on a drug test?

Yes. BPC-157, TB-500 and growth hormone secretagogues including ipamorelin are on the WADA Prohibited List and are detectable in tested athletes.

### How long does BPC-157 take to work?

There is no validated human timeline, because there are no controlled human efficacy trials. Any timeline quoted online is anecdotal.

### What is the difference between BPC-157 and TB-500?

Both are marketed for repair. BPC-157 is a gastric-juice-derived sequence associated with angiogenesis and gut protection; TB-500 is a thymosin beta-4 fragment associated with actin regulation and cell migration. Neither has completed human efficacy trials for injury recovery.

## The ReGenesis Position

We take an evidence-first approach to men's health. Peptide science is real and genuinely promising — the GLP-1 class alone has reshaped metabolic medicine — but promise is not proof, and an unregulated vial from an offshore website is not therapy.

If your goal is better recovery, body composition, energy, libido or erectile function, there are Canadian-authorized, monitored pathways that work: full hormonal and metabolic bloodwork, [testosterone optimization where clinically indicated](/blog/testosterone-therapy-injectable-topical-hcg-clomid-guide), cardiovascular risk assessment (remember, [ED is an early warning sign for heart disease](/blog/erectile-dysfunction-and-heart-disease-connection)), [lifestyle and training interventions with measurable effect sizes](/blog/natural-ways-to-improve-erectile-function), and proven ED therapies escalating from oral medication to injectables to [implants](/blog/penile-implants-guide-edmonton-calgary).
